Charge VAT on what you sell

Add your business address and VAT registrations so Stripe works out the VAT on your downloads, prints and session payments.

Paid plansUpdated

When you are VAT registered, Stripe works out the VAT for each buyer's country at checkout. It covers gallery downloads, prints, and booking deposits and balances. If you are not registered, leave this empty and nothing is added.

Set up VAT

  1. Open Settings, Integrations. VAT on what you sell shows under Stripe Connect once your Stripe details are submitted.
  2. Select Set up VAT.
  3. Under Business address, enter the address of your business.
  4. Under VAT registrations, add each registration you hold, such as your home country or the EU One Stop Shop.
  5. Select Done.

The line under the heading tells you where you stand. Adding VAT at checkout lists your registrations. Not adding VAT. Your prices are charged as they are. means VAT is off. Stripe adds VAT only once both the address and at least one active registration are in. To change them later, select Manage VAT settings.

What changes for you

Your prices include VAT, so your client pays the same with VAT on or off. The VAT comes out of the price, and you keep less per sale unless you raise your prices.

For example, at a 21% rate a €20.00 photo carries €3.47 of VAT. You keep €16.53 before fees.

  • A download is taxed as a digital good. A session is taxed as a service supplied where it takes place. Stripe applies the right rule to each.
  • A business client can enter a VAT number at checkout.
  • Sale emails and your client's receipt show the VAT included.
  • Xposure pays Stripe's fee for working out the tax. It is not taken from your sales.

Important: Registering for VAT and filing your returns is your responsibility. Stripe works out the amount at checkout. It does not file it for you.

Some print products are made in the UK or the US. Your client may owe import VAT on delivery.
