Aria Chen
I trained as an architect and spent six years drawing buildings before I started photographing the parts nobody draws: the shadow a railing throws at four o’clock, the one bright seam between two walls. I work slowly, on foot, and usually return to a place five or six times before a frame is right.
On printing
Who makes the prints?
I do, in the studio, on an Epson SC-P9500 with pigment inks. I sign every print and proof each edition against the first one.
What paper do you use?
Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308, a matte cotton paper. It holds the soft greys in the concrete better than any gloss.
How long do they last?
Rated for over a hundred years away from direct sun. Frame behind UV glass if the wall gets afternoon light.
Can I see a print before buying?
Yes. Prints can be viewed at the studio in Kiyosumi by appointment, or at the autumn show while it runs.
Write to the studio
For editions, commissions or a studio visit. I answer in English or Japanese within a few days.
